HISTORY: In 1557 Sir Antony Browne, the Lord Chief Justice, acquired the land on which Brentwood School was first built. During Mary Tudor's reign, hundreds of Protestants were burned at the stake and a well-known Brentwood Protestant, William Hunter, was ordered by Sir Antony Browne to be executed. This act may have led Sir Antony Browne to found Brentwood School.
EXTRA-CURRICULAR: The School offers an exceptional programme of co-curricular and enrichment activities with a wide and diverse selection of clubs, societies and trips available. Some aim to stimulate and extend students with a particular subject passion whereas some are less subject-driven and more focused on broadening interests and knowledge. Pupils may elect to take part in competitive and recreational sport, musical activities, drama groups and productions, public speaking, art, technology and many others. Our co-curricular provision is inclusive in nature and they encourage all students to take part in activities and societies that they might find interesting. There is something for everyone.
ENGLISH SUPPORT: The EAL Department with 3 full time members of staff, provide an academic learning environment in which non-native speakers of English are able to develop their skills in the four key areas of the language – reading, writing, speaking and listening. The department ensures that international students who do not have a proficient level of English are given dedicated lessons each week. All applicants for whom English is not their first language will be asked to sit an appropriate level EAL paper as part of the Admissions process. Once a new boarder joins, they will undertake a full EAL assessment shortly after arrival and a programme of extra support will be implemented for each pupil as necessary. A standard level of extra support is provided at no extra cost. However, if additional support is required, extra lessons can be arranged and are subject to additional fees. English is the common language of the School and boarders are expected to speak English in all public areas of the School and the boarding house. Boarders participate fully in all aspects of school life. They have access to the School’s sports facilities seven days a week as well as the opportunity to participate in inter-House competitions and other co-curricular activities. Housemasters and Housemistresses make sure there is a wide range of activities on offer for boarders in the evenings and at weekends. In the past, boarders have enjoyed; weekends in the Peak District, visits to Theme Parks and shows in London’s West End. Christmas celebrations include a shopping trip and a formal dinner. The school also celebrates the Chinese New Year, a lively occasion attended by boarders and staff.
SIZE: The total number of pupils across the whole school is around 1,835. There are approximately 70 Boarders that come from a wide range of countries including Russia, Indonesia, Germany, China, Hong Kong, Italy, France, Mongolia, Jamaica and the UK. Average class sizes in the Senior School are 1:20 and in the Sixth Form 1:10.
POST-16 QUALIFICATIONS: Student life centres around a stunning purpose-built Sixth Form building, where there are state-of-the-art classrooms, a fully-equipped computer suite and an impressive Auditorium seating 400 people. These sit alongside common rooms, private study areas and spaces where you can relax. At the same time, you have the benefit of being part of the whole School, and a huge range of clubs, societies and Co-Curricular activities that are on offer to expand your experience. You will also be issued with an iPad to enhance your learning experience and prepare you for the digital world that awaits you after your studies.
PRE-16 QUALIFICATIONS: From 11+ until the Sixth Form, boys and girls are taught separately. In the Sixth Form, classes are mixed to prepare young men and women for the world beyond school. We encourage our pupils to apply what they learn across subject areas: a lesson about number sequencing in Mathematics could well be applied to composing a score in Music lessons. The ability to think in a flexible way means that Brentwood pupils are always able to turn their hands to any task. Our teaching staff present academic subjects in ways that relate them to the real world; we promote practical as well as intellectual engagement. Exceptional facilities enable us to give all our pupils the chance to participate in engaging practical lessons and there are a huge number of trips and visits, from the battlefields of Ypres and the volcanic splendour of Iceland to the illuminated streets of Tokyo and the picturesque scenery of Snowdonia.
ACCOMMODATION: They offer full and weekly boarding for 13 to 18-year-olds in comfortable houses where experienced husband and wife teams ensure the best possible care for all the boarders. The School benefits hugely from their boarders’ rich mixture of backgrounds - they are a truly international community.
PASTORAL: At Brentwood School, they have an outstanding level of pastoral care. The wellbeing and safety of all our pupils is their highest priority and they have an excellent team in place to support each young person individually. The extended pastoral team in the Senior School comprises the Senior Deputy Head, Director of Pastoral Care and Safeguarding, Deputy Designated Safeguarding Leads, Heads of Year and their Deputies, Form Tutors, Boarding staff, Pastoral Managers, our Chaplain, Director of Pupil Wellbeing, the School’s medical team and our School counsellors. Together they support the wellbeing of all their pupils, enabling each pupil to thrive in a kind, caring and inclusive community.
