In order to manage the academic and social demands of life at Harrow, boys must be fairly fluent in the English language before they arrive. Screening for EAL occurs at Common Entrance ( the test all prospective Harrow pupils take prior to being offered a place). When a boy reaches Harrow his English skills are further developed in his English lessons and through dedicated EAL tests. In those cases where a boy needs extra support, teaching is provided by specialist EAL teachers working in the Learning Skills department. The average class size at Harrow is 13. Approximately 20% of Harrow students are from overseas and there are 12 Boarding houses at Harrow and all pupils board at the school.
