HISTORY: From its foundation in 1935 through to the present day the school has inspired generations of students to immerse themselves in The Millfield Way to discover their personal brilliance. Millfield has the resource and attitude to bring together key staff to provide an education and experience that honours each individual child.
EXTRA-CURRICULAR: Over 100 different activities are currently offered during the course of the year. MAP includes many sports to broaden options, plus a range of other pursuits, hobbies and voluntary work. Recently there have been a number of activities included which cater for mental health and wellbeing. In Lower Sixth and Year 11 students can also choose to participate in lectures as part of the Emerging Adults component of the EAGLES programme.
ENGLISH SUPPORT: Students from around the world live together in boarding houses and share all aspects of school life including sports and extra-curricular activities, which provide a valuable learning experience. Many of their international students receive specialised English language tuition in the EAL Department, where teachers help students with both their everyday and academic English, as well as providing language support for work in academic subjects. The school is a multi-faith community and religions other than Christianity are both valued and practised.
SIZE: Millfield is extremely proud of its international character. They embrace students from all countries and believe that the rich cultural diversity, provided by over 250 overseas students from more than 70 different nationalities, and a further 200 British students living abroad, is a truly wonderful opportunity for students and staff alike to learn about cultural differences and promote tolerance, respect and understanding - all very important values in our modern-day global culture.
POST-16 QUALIFICATIONS: The Sixth Form curriculum has been designed to provide students with a broad and flexible choice of subjects and courses which include A levels (or equivalent), BTECs and GCSEs. Each course has its own entry requirements. See Sixth Form Courses brochure for more information.
PRE-16 QUALIFICATIONS: Millfield offers an exceptionally wide range of courses which underpin the school's curriculum whilst still allowing students' programmes to be tailored to individual needs. An exciting range of vocational courses are also available in the Sixth Form, including BTECs and the Leiths Introductory Certificate.
ACCOMMODATION: The boarding environment at Millfield encourages students to live their lives to the full in as many spheres as possible, allowing individuality to flourish. The houses are the focal point of students’ lives at school; boarders are highly supportive of each other’s achievements and enjoy going to sports matches, concerts and plays where friends are performing. All boarders (around 75% of students) are full boarders so they live at school seven days a week and there is a vibrant weekend programme of activities.
PASTORAL: The care of each individual pupil is central to the philosophy of pastoral care at Millfield. Small tutor groups provide an environment for all pupils to meet others, seek the guidance and support of their tutor and also experience the Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education programme (PSHEE). Each tutor group is attached by a house, and all pupils can access the Housemaster or Housemistress.
