HISTORY: Leighton Park has been awarded the Best Co-educational School 2021, South East England. The UK Government’s latest 16-18 years league tables reveal Leighton Park to be the best performing School in Berkshire and in the top 14 boarding schools in the country. The School is particularly well known for its STEAM academic approach (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths), winning the national Award for Excellence in STEAM Education in 2020/21. The school particularly welcomes students with strengths in these areas. This might include students who are interested in the following areas: Engineering, Science, Computer Science, Product Design, Architecture & Medicine. ENGLISH SUPPORT: EAL is offered to international students who require support, on both a one-to-one and a group basis by specialist teachers. These classes usually take place during the timetabled lesson when peers would be learning a second language. Students taking EAL are able to take public examinations for language qualifications in their native language which require much less preparation time. English language (IELTS) entry levels are : Years 7-9 -around 4-4.5, Year 10- level 5, Year 11 (Pre-Sixth) -level 5.5, Lower Sixth level 5.5-6.
SIZE: Leighton Park School is a mixed school that welcomes pupils from ages 11-18. Typically more than 25% of the pupils are international students. The school has approximately 520 pupils in total, of which almost 150 are boarders.
POST-16 QUALIFICATIONS: Last year 74% of students achieved A*/B. Normally three subjects, from a choice of 18, subjects are studied to a very high level Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) available for students.
PRE-16 QUALIFICATIONS: Average class size is 16, as in lower years, 26 GCSE-level options available, many reflecting the School’s strength in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics). They are the only School in England that offers the iGCSE Global Perspectives as a core subject, reflecting the School’s commitment to intercultural understanding and peace The School places great emphasis on educational trips to contextualise and enrich subject lessons.
ACCOMMODATION: Boarding is a wonderful opportunity for students to develop their independence and grow as individuals. Boarders enjoy a warm welcoming home from home with the support and facilities to excel. Each House is like its own community, with dedicated staff and plenty of opportunities to socialise. SEN: SEN provision-Leighton Park supports students who require up to one hour a week additional support for specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia, dyscalculia, working memory, slow processing etc through the school's Individual Learning Centre (ILC)
