Aberystwyth University

HISTORY: Opened in 1872 the university moved to a new site in the town in 1960’s. The university is keen on promoting the Welsh language and Welsh heritage and culture.

LOCATION: The town and university are both compact and students make up a large proportion of the town’s population. According to the UK Crime Statistics in June 2009, Ceredigion (Aberystwyth area) experienced the lowest rate of crime per capita anywhere in England or Wales.

RANKING: Aberystwyth university is ranked between 501-600th in the Times Higher Education World university rankings. It is ranked between 901-1000th in the Shanghai Jaio Tong rankings. Aberystwyth is not a member of the Russell group of universities.

INTERNATIONAL: There are over 90 countries represented within the student population at Aberystwyth and they account for approximately 8% of the total student numbers.

SIZE: There are approximately 10,000 full time undergraduate and postgraduate students at Aberystwyth. The study numbers are split into approximately 8,800 undergraduates, and 1,200 postgraduates.

EMPLOYMENT: 96.8% of Aberystwyth graduates were in work or involved in further study – (source HESA). FACILITIES: About a half of all students are members of the University’s Athletic Union. Watersports is a particular highlight of non-academic life at Aberystwyth, as the town is on the Cardigan Bay coast. There is also a pool and indoor sports centre and many clubs and societies.

ACCOMMODATION: Both self-catering and catered options are available at Aberystwyth, plus car parking spaces.Penbryn is the university's catered halls of residence; single and twin rooms are available, with shared bathroom facilities. It is about a 2 minute walk from the main campus where the majority of lectures take place. Halls fees are for a standard 39 weeks. There is also plenty of choice of self catered accommodation within close proximity to the university.The lowest price for a single room with shared bathroom and kitchen facilities is £85.40 per week for 39 weeks.An example price for catered accommodation is £170.78 per week (en-suite) at Pantycelyn.

COST: International students International undergraduate tuition fees: Arts, Social Studies and Law degree courses are £14,300, and Science based courses are £16,300.
