HISTORY:
“Bath Academy has its origins in a small establishment called ‘Bridge Tutors’, housed briefly in Oxford House on Lansdown in Bath. A quarter of a century ago in 1997 - under the impetus given by a London tutor, David Game, it took on a life of its own in its own home: Bath Academy in Queen Square.A Mathematician from New College, Oxford, David started his first tutorial college in London in 1974, using five rooms in the basement of a building in West Kensington. Since then he has been involved in founding 13 colleges in England as well as 3 schools and a university abroad.Tutorial colleges had begun in the 1930s providing private tutoring for Oxford and Cambridge entrance and Colonial Service entrance examinations. Known as ‘crammers’ – they often specialized in providing last minute revision courses for those who had not adequately prepared for their university entrance. However, by the 1960s even The Royal Society recognised the need for small colleges bridging the gap between the rote learning at traditional schools and the guided self-tuition at university level. The Society called for a ‘competing alternative to remaining at school’ to be established with the aim of ‘re-conditioning’ students to develop the ‘internally motivated enquiring attitude’ to ensure success at university. Tutorial colleges were admirably suited to provide this kind of small-scale, supportive and challenging, personalized learning.
