HISTORY: Aston become a university in 1966, but can date its history back to 1875. Its 1966 University charter focus was on industry links and the value of the ‘sandwich’ degree, acknowledging that time spent in industry or off campus was of value to students. This approach is still very much part of Aston’s ethos today.
LOCATION: Aston is situated in the heart of Birmingham and is largely focused on a 40 acre city centre campus, including the Student Village, housing extensive accommodation. The Campus is 10 minutes walk from Birmingham city centre. Birmingham has over 65,000 students studying in the city as a whole.
RANKING: Aston university is ranked between 401-500th in the Times Higher Education World university rankings. It is ranked between 701-800th in the Shanghai Jaio Tong university rankings. It is not a member of the Russell Group of universities.Aston university is ranked =70th in the National Student Survey Satisfaction rankings.
INTERNATIONAL: International undergraduate tuition fees: Fees for full time undergraduate courses start at £15,950 for most Social Science and Business related courses. Engineering courses start at £19,000 and go up to £20,200.Aston typically has over 3,700 students from over 120 countries studying at the university. This represents approximately 33% of all students.

FACILITIES: Dozens of societies and sports clubs operate at Aston. Recently upgraded sports facilities include a gym and swimming pool. Racquet sports also catered for with squash and racquetball courts.
ACCOMMODATION: Extensive student accommodation is available on campus within the Student Village. Accommodation is payable by term and is all self catering. Accommodation tends to be within shared flats, but the rooms are generally en suite with shared kitchen facilities. Accommodation is guaranteed for all 1st year students and for all years of study for international students.The lowest price for a single room with an ensuite and shared kitchen facilities is £141.00 per week.There is no catered university accommodation.
SUBJECT AREAS: REF (Research Excellence Framework) was an independent government review conducted into the quality of research at UK universities and published in December 2014. ONLINE COURSES: Aston currently does not offer any undergraduate online degrees, but does offer a significant number of online masters programmes, including an internationally accredited online MBA. These are provided through Aston University Online. They also provide online degrees in life and health sciences for those who are looking to work in the health industry, or who want to progress their careers and expertise in healthcare.
