Loughborough University originated in 1909 with the establishment of a small Technical Institute in the centre of Loughborough which provided local people with an opportunity for further education in technical subjects, the sciences and art. In 1966 Loughborough University of Technology was chartered and became the UK’s first technological university. It was renamed Loughborough University in 1996. In 2015 the University will open a second campus on the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London. Since its foundation, Loughborough University has developed a reputation for technology and for its links with industry. In latter years it has also become renowned for its focus on Sport.
Loughborough is a campus university. The main campus is 1.3 miles or an 18 minute walk from the town centre. A shuttle bus service is available every 10-15 minutes stretching to every hour at night. This service covers the town and airport.
Loughborough university is ranked between 301-350 in the Times Higher Education rankings. Loughborough is ranked between 701-800 in the Shangai Jaio Tong rankings and is not a member of the Russell group of universities.

There are currently 2500 international students at Loughborough, who come from 130 countries worldwide, representing 15% of total student numbers.
Figures for 2013 indicate a total of 16,020 students of which 11,705 are undergraduates and 4315 are postgraduates.

Loughborough University hosts over 100 different sports and cultural societies. In keeping with its reputation, there is a big focus on sport – the university Sports Centre offers over 60 classes per week. The University also owns a theatre and auditorium and there is a cinema and nightclub on campus. The University Media department boasts a radio and TV station and musicians can join the University orchestra, concert band or choir. The town of Loughborough is home to 4 museums and a cinema as well as restaurants, pubs and cafes. Every year the town hosts the Loughborough Canal Festival.
The University owns 16 halls of residence, most of which are situated on campus and close to the town centre. A range of catered and self-catered accommodation is available. All first year students are guaranteed accommodation in University-owned premises. Contracts vary from 35-41 weeks for undergraduates and most postgraduate contracts are for 50 weeks.

Full time masters (taught) postgraduate course fees start at £16,100 for Graphic Design, rise to £20,500 for Advanced Physics and up to £23,950 for Finance & Innovation.
