HISTORY: The University of Sussex was the first of a new wave of UK universities founded in the 1960’s. In 1958 the government approved the scheme for a university at Brighton. The University was established as a company in 1959, with a Royal Charter being granted in 1961. Sir Basil Spence designed the original campus buildings and these were given listed status in 1993. The University was pioneering in its organisation with the campus being divided into Schools of Study, enabling students able to benefit from a multidisciplinary teaching environment. The University of Sussex placed great importance on cross-disciplinary activity so that students would graduate from the university with a range of background or 'contextual' knowledge to complement their specialist 'core' skills in a particular subject area.
LOCATION: The University of Sussex is situated on a large and open green field site. The campus is in the village of Falmer, on the edge of Brighton & Hove - a lively seaside city. The University is a single campus site and students can study, live and socialise on this one site. Brighton & Hove is 3.8 miles from the campus. There is a regular train service from Falmer station. Students can get the night-bus to and from town and the campus residences. Students can also request to be met at the start of campus or Falmer Station by a Security Officer to escort them back to the residences and vice versa.
